How BOSAQ redesigned the water treatment system at the Princess Elisabeth Station on Antarctica

THE CLIENT

The wastewater treatment system at the Princess Elisabeth Station in Antarctica didn’t function properly. BOSAQ helped redesign the water treatment and found a solution to create drinking water. The result was a zero-emissions facility that purified 100% of the grey and black water and reused 60-80% of the water for showering, washing, e.t.c. BOSAQ is the partner for sustainable water management and circular water economy.

INTRODUCTION

An assignment on Antarctica: who would say no to that offer?

The location is about as cool as it gets, but working conditions are hard and unpredictable. Working on Antarctica is a big challenge for sure, but those are exactly the type of projects we like at BOSAQ.

The challenge

The Princess Elisabeth Station on Antarctica already had a water treatment system, but it didn’t function properly.

Our assignment was to find a solution to create drinking water and to redesign the water treatment system according to the strict environmental standards of the Station.

The Princess Elisabeth Station is on a zero-emission basis, so we had to find the most sustainable solution.

The Solution

First of all: creating drinking water in an environment full of dense ice isn’t as easy as you might think. We first needed to melt a lot of ice, before we were able to turn it into drinking water.

The water needed to be mineralized and daily bacteriological and quality testing is a normal routine at the Princess Elisabeth Station. In addition, we redesigned the entire water treatment system to implement a circular water economy and optimize water reuse.

Next to the technical difficulties, we were also surprised by the big psychological challenge to urge everyone to handle water as a precious resource. Our assignment wasn’t finished as soon as the water treatment system was implemented. The system also needed to be managed and maintained, a perfect job for BOSAQ.

We are proud that our company, was responsible for the water treatment system at the Princess Elisabeth Station, in Antarctica, for five consecutive years.

The Result

The results of this project were amazing:

  • 100% of the used grey and and black water is purified
  • 60%-80% of the water is reused (e.g. for showering, washing, etc.)

We are very proud to have been responsible for the water treatment of the Princess Elisabeth Station in Antarctica for 5 consecutive years.
